Before central heating was invented, house were often cold and damp. Bed warmers were filled with hot ashes or embers, pushed into the bed and moved around to warm it prior to the person retiring to bed. They were often made of copper as it conducts heat well and is quite light.

This bed warmer was reputedly owned by Vernon Hutt of Aspley, who moved to Queensland from England. Unfortunately we have been unable to find more information on him.
