Play Time: Children’s Items from the Colonial Era Through to the Early 1900s
Given our dependence on electronic devices for entertainment today, it can be hard to imagine how children kept themselves busy in decades past! In this display, however, you can see just a small number of the many types of toys that children played with in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Enamel tea sets, toy prams, wind-up carts and racquets could provide hours of fun and all sorts of different games between siblings and friends. Take a close look as well at the slab hut and doll’s house, in particular at the dolls performing their daily tasks in the different rooms, in a clever reimagining of an 1880s Brisbane mansion.
